Malnutrition symptoms.

  • Symptoms of malnutrition in older adults include-

    • weight loss

    • dry mouth

    • muscle weakness

    • difficulty getting out of a chair or bed

    • needing to use upper limbs to help get them out of a chair due to weak thigh muscles

    • confusion/delirium

    • deteriorating mobility

    • falls

    • adverse drug reactions- the malnourished older person’s body cannot handle drugs well because they have low serum albumin (circulating protein) which helps to bind drugs to prevent drug toxicity and drug to drug interactions.
